Nonito Donaire-Anselmo Moreno Bout in Discussion
Contrary to recent speculation, newly crowned WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire is being discussed for a possible May unification bout against WBA champion Anselmo Moreno, according to trainer Robert Garcia.
“[Top Rank] are talking about Moreno in May, in San Francisco,” Garcia said.
Moreno (30-1, 10KOs) is scheduled to defend his title against Lorenzo Parra on Aril 30 in Panama; however, that will be ruled out if a Donaire-Moreno deal moves forward.
The Panama-native, whose last loss was in 2002, is coming off two highly contested split decision wins over Nehomar Cermeno in 2010. Nevertheless, Garcia does not agree with the recent criticism of Moreno and is prepared to dissect the champion’s skills.
“Moreno is a good fighter,” Garcia said. “I haven’t seen any tapes of him, but I’ll get them. I have a guy who can get me footage of him.”
On the other hand, Donaire (26-1, 18 KOs) appears to be wasting no time; after defeating former WBO/WBC champion Fernando Montiel by what most critics are referring to as, the current knockout of 2011; “The Filipino Flash” called out bantamweight titlists Moreno and Koki Kameda.
“First, I want to be undisputed champion,” Donaire said. “But, if they don’t want to make it happen, I have my full trust in Cameron Dunkin to make it happen for me at 122 or 126 (pounds).”
Top Rank declined to comment on the details, but promises a fight announcement in the upcoming weeks.
